When new NCAA rules last summer began allowing athletes to profit from their name, image or likeness, Michigan’s football program struck a novel deal. When fans ordered a player’s jerseyof M Den, the university’s official retail partner, the athlete got a cut of the sale.

Michigan junior Christopher Hinton opted into the deal, which his parents said pays the player $20 for each $120-$180 personalized jersey sold. He was surprised when he got his first quarterly check. It was for $80.
