Ordered to report to the security office at game’s end, Dupree’s first day was almost surely his last. Weekdays, he was a beloved coach, teacher and principal in Dallas ISD. Weekends, he was an invaluable member of the Cowboys organization. Six-foot-four Dupree was a mountain of a man, but, by all accounts, his heart was the largest part of his presence — and he had a smile as big as Texas.
She said it’s important to remember not just how important Dupree was to the Cowboys, but the difference he made in the lives of so many DISD students. Taylor, the middle of the three adult Dupree children, believes his dad’s way of living his life came from losing his own father at an early age. Corey recalled a Cowboys event at which his dad pointed to where he and his young school buddy were supposed to stay put while Dupree did his work.“I’m caught in a hard place,” Corey recalled. “Dad said don’t move, but he always said don’t lose your friends. So I took off too. Troy was so nice to us.”
Eventually he got his master’s in educational administration, with a focus on discipline, and served as assistant principal at Thomas Jefferson High School and Hillcrest. “She was right. It was unsafe and wild, and we needed a principal there who could also handle discipline,” Hinojosa recalled. Current DISD superintendent Stephanie Elizalde said Dupree was, most of all, an advocate for students.
