Ukraine began to mobilize reservists and called on its citizens to leave Russia immediately because of a growing threat of war, a day after the U.S. and several allies announced a broad range of sanctions against Moscow. Follow latest developments.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen attend a meeting in Moscow on Wednesday.Syria supports Russia’s recognition of the independence of two breakaway regions in Ukraine, the Middle Eastern country’s foreign minister said during a trip to Moscow.

Syria joins a handful of countries around the world, including Belarus and Nicaragua, that support Russia’s recognition of the two statelets in the Donbas region in east Ukraine, a move that the West has condemned. “We have been cooperating with the republics of Donetsk and Luhansk for a long time, and we believe that these current conditions will help increase this cooperation,” Foreign Minister Fayssal Mikdad said in a speech carried by Syrian state media.

Russia is the Syrian regime's most powerful ally, and its military forces have been instrumental in allowing President Bashar al-Assad to claw back control over much of the country from rebel forces and Islamic State. Moscow maintains air and naval bases across Syria and Russian companies have been granted favorable contracts for the exploitation of the country’s natural resources.
