A Last of Us video shows how accurate episode 1 was in a comparison video.
Following the premiere of the highly-anticipated The Last of Us television series, a comparison video shows just how game-accurate episode 1 truly is. The new zombie horror HBO show is based on the critically acclaimed 2013 PlayStation 3 video game of the same name.
Pedro Pascal stars as Joel Miller, a rugged black market smuggler who is tasked to transport precocious 14-year-old orphan, Ellie , across a post-apocalyptic zombie-infested United States to the headquarters of a militant revolutionary faction known as the Fireflies. Although many video game adaptations veer from the source material in significant ways, as seen in Sonic the Hedgehog, The Last of Us has remained relatively faithful to the video game that captured the imagination of gamers all over the world. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY IGN recently created a comparison video that highlights the similarities between The Last of Us episode 1 and original scenes from the video game. IGN's video uses side-by-side comparisons to showcase how faithful The Last of Us' premiere episode was to the original game. Episode 1 features Joel's daughter, Sarah sporting the same shirt as her video game counterpart while the family's desperate escape happens much in the same way. Even specific lines of dialogue are pulled directly from the video game. What The Last of Us Changed From the Game The Last of Us co-creators, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, have previously assured fans that the HBO adaptation will remain true to the source material. However, they also teased mind-blowing new additions to the story, as well as narrative elements that were originally cut from the game during its production inserted back into the story for the adaptation. One major change immediately noticeable to longtime fans revolves around how the deadly zombie-causing fungal infection is handled in the show. Druckmann, who created the original video game, was inspired by real-world fungi called Cordyceps. Certain strains are known to infect insects' brains, changing the animal's behavior. In The Last of Us game, the infection is spread through the bite of an infected individual or from spores generated by a deceased infected person. However, spores were completely removed from the show as Mazin believed that spores in the real world would be too easily transmittable, making mass human survival too unrealistic. This would understandably push the show's suspension of disbelief too far. Although the show's creators promised a faithful adaptation, trailers have shown new story elements not originally in the iconic video game. For example, a group of violent survivors that terrorized the heroes in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania will be located in Kansas City and be given a leader named Kathleen, portrayed by Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey. Episode 3 has also been teased with drastic changes to The Last of Us' narrative. It will feature both Bill and Frank surviving together in a small town. However, Frank was never seen alive in the original game. As The Last of Us continues on HBO, audiences can see how the show honors the beloved video game.
