The Last of Us 3 could help the HBO series' future

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The recent leaks from the making of The Last of Us Part III are a promising sign for the future of the HBO series. After adapting the first of two existing Last of Us games into the first season of the TV adaptation, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin are halfway to running out of source material. They may have to adapt The Last of Us Part III before it’s even been made.

The Last of Us TV series has been such a huge hit, and has so much potential, that HBO won’t let it end with Part II. The network will want to keep this show going for as long as possible. Part II left a couple of plot threads open-ended to be explored in a future game, like Ellie’s return to Jackson and Abby and Lev’s journey to join the remaining Fireflies off the coast of California.

These leaks suggest that Part III, much like Part II, will jump back and forth between the focal character of the series, Ellie, and a brand-new group of survivors with their own motives and objectives. If the leaks are to be believed, then The Last of Us Part III might not be continuing Abby and Lev’s storyline after they sailed away to the Fireflies, but their story is far from over.

New Characters Mean HBO's Franchise Can Continue Beyond Joel And Ellie If the next chapter of The Last of Us saga continues to move away from the original duo, then HBO’s TV adaptation can keep going long after Joel and even Ellie’s stories are complete. Naughty Dog has envisioned a humongous post-apocalyptic world full of fascinating characters, with five more on the way in The Last of Us Part III.
