Warning: This article contains major spoilers for The Last of Us season 1, episode 2.The Last of Us actor Anna Torv provides insight into her character’s tense ending in season 1, episode 2, “Infected.” Torv plays Tess in the new HBO adapted series, in which she and Joel were tasked to take Ellie to a Fireflies' location in exchange for resources needed to search for Joel's brother, Tommy.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with TVLine, The Last of Us actor Anna Torv has opened up about her character Tess and her death in “Infected.” First, Torv opens up about the not-so-touchy-feely relationship between Tess and Joel. She described the relationship as them just getting by and relying on mutual trust.
"I think at the particular moment, she’s just been bit and so she does have more hope. So she’s just been bit. It’s been there for a bit. She can feel it. She knows it coming. It’s starting to infect her, and she’s starting to go, 'This girl is real…' So I think, in that moment, not only is there irritability and like a little bit of anger coming out, I think she really is like this is what it can be, my life can be worth it.
As Sarah’s death in episode 1 shapes who Joel becomes and is for the rest of the series, Tess’ death shapes who Joel needs to become for the rest of his journey with Ellie. Before parting ways, Joel and Tess are faced with the dilemma of whether to accept Ellie as a beacon of hope or just another pipe dream. Once Tess is a bit, she begins to believe. She sees just how important Ellie is and basically tells Joel that he needs to get on board.
Tess’ death will also change the dynamic between Joel and Ellie, as there is no longer any buffer between them. With Tess gone, who warmed up to Ellie more quickly, the subsequent events will likely lead to awkward and tense moments between the two differing individuals. Tess is no longer there to save Joel from facing his fear of becoming the surrogate father for Ellie and is no longer around to keep Ellie company.
