We chat with TheLastKingdom star Alexander Dreymon about his growth over 5 seasons, how SevenKingsMustDie is the perfect chapter to end on, and whether Uhtred is too old for romance at this point in his life:
Uhtred of Bebbanburg's story finally comes to a close in The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, which will grace Netflix's content library on April 14. Based on Bernard Cornwell's epic novels, The Last Kingdom lasted 5 seasons and centers on the Anglo-Saxon nobleman Uhtred who sought to reclaim his birthright after being raised by Danes when he was young.
Alexander Dreymon: That was one of the challenges of making the show. We were not commissioned to do 5 seasons from the get-go, so at the end of each season, we had to wrap it up in a way that could make it the final episode of the series but also left room for the next one to come. So, it wasn't really different from any other season we wrapped because we never knew if we were gonna go again. We ended up going all the way, which was great, but we were used to that.
You are obviously the crux of this series, but in collaborating with director Edward Bazalgette and writer Martha Hillier, was there anything you felt just had to be present to close out Uhtred's story? I love that he comes through for Aethelstan, who isn't his biological son, but he raised him. I think he feels very paternal towards him, and so it's incredible to see him be put through everything that Aethelstan puts him through and still stick around. I'm really proud of the character for doing that.
