The Lancashire seaside town where residents will 'work 'til they drop'
Walking through Blackpool on a blustery winter afternoon, the town looks bleak. Many seasonal shops have firmly locked their shutters, and only a few people are out braving the wind, even if it is technically a rare sunny day.Recently, the government announced plans to increase the state pension age to 68 - earlier than planned - in a 'big bazooka' bid to boost funds for the Treasury.
Tony says that its awful that people are expected to work until they're 68. He thinks more money needs to be put into the NHS to help people live longer. "Who knows if you're even going to live long enough to take your state pension anyway. The statistics for Blackpool are looking like that isn't going to happen. I don't actually pay into a pension for that reason. I want the money to spend myself for making a better future for myself now."
"I don't think the money that they'll save from upping the pension age is being put back into Blackpool. I mean, look at that," he gestures to a group of homeless people sat outside McDonald's over the road. One of Blackpool's worst performing areas, according to the data, was its avoidable mortality rate, which is almost 30% worse than the national average. The area’s low score comes from poor scores like 80.24 for alcohol misuse and a poor score of 83.58 for healthy eating.
