EVEN in a war, we farmers tend to be on the lookout for angles and news that are about farming and agriculture. And, of course, the Ukraine-Russia war has that in abundance, given that the two countries were both agricultural powerhouses before Moscow's invasion. Ukraine was the world's top supplier of sunflower seeds, the exclusive wheat supplier to many North African countries, and shipped from its Black Sea ports more than 10 percent of the world's yellow corn.
During the first few days of the war, it was an actual battlefield scene, not a share of exports, that caught the attention of many Filipino farmers. A news flash report said that after Russian soldiers occupied a major Ukrainian farming area with hardly any resistance, some of the invading soldiers tried to cart off dozens of modern John Deere tractors worth several million dollars with the intention of moving the tractors into Russian territory. The spoils of war, you know.
While it is standard for rice farmers in Southeast Asia to farm with modern tractors, combines , and seeding and planting equipment, Filipino rice farmers are still stuck with the 20th-century 'kuliglig,' a handheld mini tractor that is less efficient, tougher to operate, and requires lots and lots of physical exertion. Unlike modern tractors that can be adjusted for plowing depth, the mini, handheld kuliglig lacks flexibility.
