Tylek Barnett scores 27 as TKA moves on to face Pinole Valley in D-III quarterfinals: “We have a new culture here.”

The King’s Academy built a 10-point lead after three quarters and managed to hold off a high-energy rally by Ygnacio Valley to post a 64-61 victory Tuesday in the opening round of the Northern California Division III regional playoffs.“We have never been this far,” said TKA’s Tylek Barnett, who led all scorers with 27 points. “To win this game shows we have a new culture here and we’ll really be able to do anything.

TKA has had some success in recent years, going a combined 27-14 over the past two seasons, but took it to a new level in 2022-23. After a bucket by Barnett early in the fourth quarter, TKA equaled its biggest lead of the game at 53-42 before Ygnacio Valley turned up the fullcourt pressure and intensity and launched a rally.

Kellogg hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game with 3 seconds left before a free throw by Jon Taylor closed out the scoring.
