The Brit Awards is the UK equivalent of the Grammys, which means that, although endearingly bonkers, it is not a temple of high fashion. Even Lady Gaga’s 2010 ode to Alexander McQueen and Dua Lipa’s celebration of Britishness courtesy of Vivienne Westwood in 2021 veered towards costume, rather than runway, territory. Geri Halliwell’s iconic Union Jack dress? Let’s not forget you could see her knickers. Thank God, then, for Kate Moss, who raised the bar in 2014 with her ode to David Bowie.
Styled by Kate Phelan and titled “Oh! You Pretty Thing Thing”, photographer Nick Knight captured her throwing shapes in a glittering asymmetrical Kansai Yamamoto one-piece and typical Aladdin Sane make-up to accentuate the lightning bolt crashing down her face on the cover. “Some models would just not look right in them, you can’t imagine putting some of the clothes on Linda Evangelista or Nadja Auermann or whoever would have been on the scene at the time,” noted Knight later on.
