Why is the ancient art of ukiyo-e an ongoing source of inspiration for some of our top artists?

There’s an element of voyeurism in the Japanese art of ukiyo-e. You get that feeling you’re glimpsing into another world, says Sydney-based artist Cressida Campbell.

A new show at Geelong Gallery brings together Preston and Campbell’s work with examples of ukiyo-e by masters such as Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige and Utagawa Toyokuni., it will explore how the Australian artists’ work has been influenced by the Japanese and how they’ve adapted and evolved the ancient processes.

Speaking about the Geelong show, which opens on May 17, Campbell says she is intrigued to see the works hung together. One of the most interesting things, to her mind, is it showcases three completely different ways of making a woodcut.
