Founded by American tech and media leaders, the Iranian Diaspora Collective is raising funds to provide VPNs and improved internet access to the people of Iran.

“This is the first revolution in modern times led by women and girls,” Mahdara said in an exclusive interview with me. “They want an end to the Islamic Republic of Iran. They do not want to live in a theocratic government. They want the chance at a democracy. They want to be free to live their lives the way other free societies around the world live. They want to dance and sing in public, choose what they wear, choose who to love, and earn fair and equal wages.

When Mahdara first heard reports that the Iranian government was killing influencers, vloggers and artists for protesting, she said, she was shocked that there was so little mainstream media coverage in America. She cofounded the Iranian Diaspora Collective as a way to amplify the voices of Iranian youth and help them get their message out to the world.... [+]“The Iranian government is holding its own citizens hostage, and has been doing so for over 44 years,” Mahdara says.

Mahdara continues, “This is a terrorist government that thrives on chaos, steals money, and commits human rights abuses without any consequences from the global community. Businesses and governments around the world need to stop doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The creation of a democratically-elected government in Iran would have an enormous social and economic ripple effect, for the greater good of the world.”campaign raises money to keep Iranians connected to the internet.

The population of Iran is overwhelmingly young — approximately 60% is under 30. Most young Iranians are educated, tech-savvy, and want to be part of the global conversation – like youth everywhere in the world. But they are living under a totalitarian regime that wants to control their every move. “We need to amplify their voices so they can create a new future for Iran,” Mahdara says.
