This article delves into the pervasive presence of plastics in our daily lives and their alarming accumulation in the environment and human bodies. It discusses the health risks associated with ingesting microplastics and nanoplastics, highlighting their inflammatory properties and potential to disrupt gut integrity, leading to a range of health issues.
Hello. I'm Dr David Johnson, professor of medicine and chief of gastroenterology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia.
Plastics are categorized as microplastics when they're < 5 mm in size, which is something we can generally see, and nanoplastics when they're < 1 μm in size, which you obviously can't see. Histologically, detecting nanoplastics requires spectroscopy or some type of fluorescent micrologic analysis, meaning they won’t be found in your routine pathology report. , ingested plastics accumulate in the gastrointestinal and pulmonary tracts, where they exhibit inflammatory properties.
In terms of what we can do ourselves, making clinicians and patients aware of this issue is a good first step.
