The announcement comes amid assurances from the United States that it, too, is contemplating a joint-patrol arrangement with the Philippines.Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said during a visit to Manila earlier this week that 'as countries which are committed to the global rules-based order, it is natural that we should think about ways in which we can cooperate in this respect.

The Chinese government has not officially reacted to Marles' announcement, but on the same day that he was in Manila, China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang was in Jakarta, asking Indonesia to prod the Association of Southeast Asian Nations into approving a non-aggression treaty designed to avoid a shooting war in the South China Sea.
