If you're familiar with MotorTrend's cable TV shows, you'll know the name Bogi from All Girls Garage, which has been one of the longest running on our network—o

, alongside hosts Bruno Massel and Joe Zolper. The reasons for Bogi's popularity and longevity are as numerous and diverse as the twists and turns in her career, as Jonny Lieberman and I find out in the first of our two-part conversation.

Born in Queens, New York, Bogi grew up in Montclair, New Jersey, without much in the way of automotive inspiration from her friends and family. It was only an early fascination with VWs that started her down the path towards her stardom in automotive—but only after studying law and women's studies at and graduating from Oberlin College.

Bogi explains her career choice on our show, so we won't spoil it here, but to jump ahead, she ended getting her formal automotive education via the trade school United Technical Institute, which lead to apprenticeship programs with Ford and BMW. Bogi would then spend seven years working as an automotive technician for dealerships in New York and Arizona, before deciding to strike out on her own, but not without some serious soul searching and reservations.

With only a few dollars to her name, Bogi started repairing friend's cars in her driveway in Phoenix, Arizona, eventually establishing herself enough to not only build out an automotive repair shop, but programs that encourage and empower women to learn more about cars, automotive repair, and how not to get taken advantage of when getting their car repaired.

A focus of Girl Gang from the getgo has been project cars, which provide a wealth of teaching opportunities. Her first project vehicle? Very simple—just stuff the V-8 from a BMW M5 into a 1957 Chevrolet pickup—and debut it at the annual SEMA show. The follow up project, a 1956 Chevy pickup, called"High Yellow 56" because of its highlighter color, was the first official Girl Gang project car and got a full hot makeover.
