This article challenges the prevailing notion that individual responsibility is sufficient to combat climate change. It argues that the massive energy consumption of AI development and data centers, fueled by fossil fuels, dwarfs the impact of individual efforts. The author criticizes the narrative that places the onus on individuals while allowing corporations to continue profiting from environmentally damaging practices.

(Photo by Sarah Reingewirtz, Los Angeles Daily News/SCNG)The Saturday comic by John Darkow had Smokey the Bear saying “Only you can prevent climate change.” That’s something I used to believe but no longer do.
My family has been doing all the right things for years: We’ve reduced our use of electricity, replaced a fossil-fuel furnace with heat pumps, charge our EV with solar panels, store rainwater, grow our own fruits and vegetables. But what difference will it make? In the same newspaper, an article pointed out that billions of dollars are going into expanding power sources (mostly with fossil fuels) for AI, with data centers doubling their power consumption in six years! The message that individuals are responsible for reducing climate change is a way for the big users to avoid doing so. We’ve been made to feel responsible so that corporations can sit on their fat profits while continuing to increase their issuance of greenhouse gases. The increasing reliance on fossil fuels for AI development and data centers raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of individual efforts in mitigating climate change. While personal actions like reducing energy consumption and adopting renewable sources are important, they may be overshadowed by the exponential growth in energy demand from these industries. The narrative that individuals bear the primary responsibility for climate change can serve as a distraction from the need for systemic change and corporate accountability. The focus on individual responsibility often overlooks the role of large corporations and their significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. While individuals can make conscious choices to reduce their environmental impact, corporations have a greater capacity to implement large-scale changes and invest in sustainable technologies. Addressing climate change effectively requires a multifaceted approach that includes both individual actions and systemic reforms to hold corporations accountable for their environmental footprint

Chimpanzee Tool Use Efficiency Shows Individual Variation and Evolutionary AdvantageA new study published in Nature Human Behaviour reveals that chimpanzees exhibit individual variation in their efficiency at using tools to crack nuts. This variation may provide an evolutionary advantage, as more efficient nutcrackers expend less energy and obtain more food. The findings are based on decades of video footage documenting chimpanzee tool use.
