Dive into the captivating world of 'The Hunting Party,' NBC's newest serial killer thriller. This gripping procedural follows FBI Special Agent Rebecca 'Bex' Henderson as she investigates a devastating explosion that unleashes a chilling truth. Co-showrunners JJ Bailey and Jake Coburn reveal the inspiration behind the series, their fascination with serial killers, and their ambition to create a unique and thrilling experience for viewers.
After months of anticipation, NBC 's The Hunting Party premiered with a bang, introducing viewers to FBI Special Agent Rebecca 'Bex' Henderson played by Melissa Roxburgh. The first season is expected to conclude with Episode 10 in late April, leaving fans eager to uncover more about the series' twists and turns. To shed light on the show's intricate workings, co-showrunners JJ Bailey and Jake Coburn sat down with Collider's Samantha Coley and other journalists during a set visit.
During the insightful conversation, Bailey and Coburn revealed their inspiration for The Hunting Party, stemming from their shared fascination with serial killers. Bailey explained, 'We're both fascinated with serial killers. I really feel like I watch a lot of true crime, probably more than is healthy, but wanting to do something in that space and trying to explore, 'OK, well if there was this big explosion...' and I think we even started with a missile silo, what could have been down there and just married those two things together initially.' They aimed to create a unique concept within the serial killer genre, imagining a scenario where these murderers originated from a 'secret location that was either under attack or an accident that led to this.' The initial premise would appear to be one thing, but the series would gradually reveal a deeper, more complex reality. The Hunting Party's genesis can be traced back to a two-hour Zoom meeting between Bailey and Coburn. Introduced by a mutual friend impressed by one of Bailey's scripts, they quickly found common ground in their desire to create a procedural drama with a distinctive twist. They envisioned a captivating opening sequence featuring a massive explosion, which would set the stage for their unique take on the genre. Bailey elaborated, 'We were sort of talking about just the image of a big explosion and just how fun that would be, to kick off an episode that way, and what could we do with that, and I think we were both looking for an interesting way to do a procedural, and wanting to find something in that space that felt bigger and elevated.
