Our Humane Law Enforcement Department investigates more than 4,000 animal cruelty complaints every year.

PennLive Letters to the EditorYour editorial critical of the Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area’s transparency related to the Pursuit case and our operations left out that HSHA provided answers to PennLive reporters to more than a dozen questions, including:

We love animals and do everything we can to find them forever homes. In 2022, euthansias dropped to their lowest number in four years, while the number of animals taken into our care was the highest since 2019. The number of lost pets reunited with families reached a four-year high. Our euthanasia policy follows strict standards to ensure every animal in our care is treated equally. HSHA doesn’t euthanize due to lack of space, length of time, breed or age.

HSHA values the input from its 100 volunteers, scheduling one-on-one and small-group meetings, as well as establishing a Volunteer Advisory Committee. With so many volunteers, we know we’ll never be perfect, but we continue to work hard to show our appreciation.. Our Humane Law Enforcement Department investigates more than 4,000 animal cruelty complaints every year and employs a Humane Law Enforcement Police Officer to thoroughly investigate and, if possible, prosecute offenders.
