How to fry a turkey: Houston Fire Department provides Thanksgiving safety tips

the use of turkey fryers and recommends purchasing turkeys from a grocery store, restaurant or buying a fryer that does not use oil.HFD recommends frying turkeys that are not over 15 pounds to help prevent an overflow of oil. They recommend determining the amount of oil you will need by placing the turkey in the basket, putting it in the pot, and adding water until it reaches about two inches above the turkey. Make sure to thoroughly dry the pot after.
In addition to the tips provided in the video, the Houston Fire Department is also asking people to not pour the turkey fryer oil down their sink. "Houston Public Works responds to twice as many sewer overflows during the holiday season due a significant increase of grease clogs,"
