Injured passengers on the stricken train became trapped by the wreckage and drowned
This month marked the landmark anniversary of one of Manchester's worst ever rail disasters. Two trains crashed on a viaduct sending one plummeting into the river below, drowning a number of passengers trapped in the wreckage.
Neil told the M.E.N: "I was heading to Wales on holiday with my twin Margaret and parents Thomas and Eva when the accident happened. I wasn’t badly injured but my father broke his back and my mother was traumatised. The paper spoke to a carriage service man, Ben Edwards of Whitley Street, Collyhurst, who was reporting for duty when he witnessed the crash happen.
One 70-year old survivor told a reporter: "I was in the second coach, sitting down. It was fairly full with people going to work and holiday makers on their way to the main line stations. Weeks later, a report into the crash said negligence from signalling staff was to blame for the disaster, and a verdict of accidental death recorded.
