The Highly Infectious FLiRT Variants Behind the Summer Covid Wave

The latest dominant Covid variants have stronger infectiousness than their predecessors and the ability to evade vaccine-induced antibodies.

The northern hemisphere is entering yet another Covid wave—while much of the world acts as if the pandemic were over, cases are surging again. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded an uptick in positive Covid tests, emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths in recent weeks, while cases and hospital admissions in the UK are creeping up too. But it’s in Japan where the surge is particularly visible.

Together, these viruses are referred to as the FLiRT variants, because they all have a mutation in the spike protein that changes its 456th amino acid from phenylalanine to leucine and its 346th amino acid from arginine to threonine .
