Filmmaker Tom Gormican slipped in a few covert references, allusions to past films meant to tantalize only the most astute of Cage aficionados.
It happens after Cage has accepted a million-dollar offer to visit Spain and attend the birthday party of's obsessed superfan character Javi Gutierrez. “Nick is sitting around the pool and Javi comes over and, you know, he's very awkward around him," Gormican says. "He is trying to talk to him about his screenplay. And eventually Nick is offended by them. He pulls off his bathrobe and he walks and drops right into the pool, which is a shot from.
For Gormican, this reference was more than a gag. It was symbolic. “That's the highest point in the career, right? He's winning an Oscar for that role,” the filmmaker says. “And in this movie, where he's playing himself, this is the lowest point in our film. But instead of like Elisabeth Shue coming in and kissing him, we have Pedro Pascal diving in the water, grabbing Nick, and literally starting to lift him up off the bottom.
From there, things start to get better for the Nick Cage character—even if his life is suddenly in constant danger., Nick Cage is home safe with his family, talking about his oversized belt buckle, which features a massive metal tarantula.
