Read how the healing power of Lodge 49 helped one writer break through their pandemic fog.

, AMC’s So-Cal comedy-drama, the concept of “duende” is introduced. Seated in a suburban Spanish restaurant, where he is watching a member of the house band begin a spirited guitar solo, Captain, an eccentric real estate developer played by Bruce Campbell, informs his companions of the phrase and its meaning. Duende, according to Captain, is “that real thing inside us that can’t be faked,” flamenco’s interpretation of soul.

Dud is at the center of everything; only he doesn’t know it. A series of unfortunate events has led him to day drinking, taking out subprime loans, and sleeping in his car. A year prior, his life was stable and relatively happy; he worked alongside his father fixing pools across Long Beach.

Since the series was canceled in 2019, I assumed that talking to Lodge’s creator, Jim Gavin, or its star Wyatt Russell will be impossible. Neither has a skincare line, tequila brand, or any of the celebrity side-hustles that justify random interviews. Still, I figure it’s worth a shot.Meanwhile, I keep ducking into the lodge, rewatching episodes any time I can spare a free moment.

Sent the pilot script the summer before production began, Russell was moved by Gavin’s prose. “A lot of writers go for this brass ring of emotional resonance and drama, but to have that and the comedic elements is rare,” he explains. “Once I read [the script], I had to meet him.” Upon introduction, he and Gavin quickly developed a rapport. “Our senses of humor are so similar, so is how we see the world,” says Russell.

After the interview, I end up sleeping for 48 hours and listening to the same King Crimson album on a loop until my neighbors bang their fists against our shared wall. Periodically I receive and ignore phone calls related to my student loans and wonder if my life will reset itself once they’ve been paid off.
