THERE is something structurally debilitating about politics in this country. We are cursed with having no room for a real opposition to flourish.
We count as a blessing the absence of gridlock, or the threat of a divided government in the same way that the United States will experience once again with its two-party system where the opposition Republicans snared a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, while the Democrats, to which incumbent President Joe Biden belongs, kept the Senate in the last midterm elections. Worse is that the House Republicans are at odds with their party mates in the Senate.
A real political opposition is hard to establish in the face of the institutionalization of supermajority politics, and where being in the minority is no longer a guarantee of being in opposition to the ruling party. It doesn't help that past electoral losses have practically emptied the benches for new generations of opposition politicians to emerge. This is a bitter reality faced by the current traditional political opposition.
