It may not have been bombastic, but episode 6 was still emotionally explosive
“Most people just bow out quietly on their last day of duty,” the Detective Superintendent tells Sgt Catherine Cawood on her retirement day. Which begs the question: is this the first time you’ve met Cawood?
Fans had previously been thrown something of a red herring in the artwork for the series, showing a house on fire, leading, with Tommy or Catherine going down in a blaze of horror. So from the moment Tommy spotted a can of petrol in the car of his assailants – who he made light work of butchering – to when he carried it with him when breaking into Catherine’s house, all signs pointed to a fiery revenge scene.
It clearly disarmed Catherine, this whimpering man sitting at her kitchen table, especially when he claims he could have been a good dad, if she’d only “just let” him. Ahem. For anyone still feeling conflicted about his apparent change of heart, she reels off a list of his rapes, assaults and murder.
There are echoes back to the very first scene of the first series, where a drunk and drugged up man douses himself in petrol, threatening to kill himself. Eight years later, Catherine is still dealing with these people, and perhaps worst of all, the man who has terrorised her family, friends and colleagues, is threatening to go out the same way. At the end of series two, she would have happily lit the match, but now she realises so much more is at stake here, namely her grandson, Ryan.
