The price tag would make Clarence Thomas blush.

The statehouse was in desperate need of renovation. It’s an old building and buildings age closer to milk than wine, so a fresh coat of paint and a few plants were overdue. What wasn’t necessarily called for is a half million dollars worth of furnishings for the governor’s office. Oh wait, it wasn’t just the governor’s office, his wife’s office got a makeover as well. Two offices for the price of $500,000 in taxpayer dollars. What a bargain.
Some highlights of the luxurious renovation are a $19,000 desk you will never work at, a $5,300 desk chair you will never sit on and a $114,000 antique carpet you will never walk on. Was Ikea closed that weekend? Who thought dropping a hundred grand on a rug was a good idea? Take a road trip out to Paramus and grab yourself an Onsevig. Hell, they’re $170, get two. Get some meatballs while you’re at it. Our treat.

Is a period of rising inflation the right time to splurge on drapes? You know how many $8 cartoons of eggs you can buy for $114,000? 14,250. That’s a big omelette.
The governor’s statehouse office should absolutely be functional, inviting and well appointed, but the numbers above are silly. Nobody needs a six figure rug, especially not the governor of a state with struggling school districts.
