ANALYSIS: A momentous deal, eye-watering cost and safety questions: Questions remain over the nuke subs plan
Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume. One SSN-AUKUS submarine to be built every two years from early 2040sabc.net.au/news/nuclear-submarine-aukus-how-cost-impact-military-capability/102089496Today, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was part of one of the most momentous announcements about the national security of Australia in the history of our nation.
Concurrently, Australia will invest in shipyards to build submarines here and in the United States and expand the Navy workforce to crew the submarines. An earlier lower estimate of $268 billion is unlikely to be credible as it doesn't factor in the likelihood of blowing the procurement budget. Even if there are rises in defence spending announced in the forthcoming Defence Strategic Review, the nuclear-powered submarines are going to absorb every spare dollar, and many other dollars already being spent on defence in other ways.
