As he tried to film a TV clip outside another London hospital, a pensioner heckled: “Are you going to do anything about the ambulances waiting? […] Twelve years and you’ve done bugger all about it. People have died and all you have done is nothing.”
She pointed out that paramedics in her union used to get nine or 10 call-outs per shift and now regularly do three, because they are caring for patients while their ambulances sit on the forecourts of hospitals. Hospitals have no free beds due to a lack of social care places. Although the then Conservative government tried to take a hardline stance, eventually public support for the staff was so strong that ministers agreed a pay rise of 16.9 per cent over two years, a new £500 per year bonus to ambulance crew members, and extra training which helped turn many into the paramedic profession we have today. Eric Roberts went on to become Unison’s President.
As Chancellor, Hunt announced in the Autumn Statement both more money and an independently verified workforce plan. Yet to many in the NHS, the cash was not enough, and the details and timetable of the workforce plan are still infuriatingly vague.
