The setting of The Goonies is said to be loosely taken from the true story of the real-life Spanish ship, Santo Cristo de Burgo, which went missing off the coast of Oregon, sometime in the 1600s. Besides its treasure-hunting setup, the Goonies is essentially a fantastical tale about four young boys who set out on a wild and crazy adventure to save their homes.
