in the scrums last week. It seemed a great move when Jones recruited the Springboks’ scrum coach Matt Proudfoot after the chastening 2019 World Cup final. Can anyone name better scrummagers in the Premiership who are not being picked?
Jones’s mantra of “I blame me” is bold but also patronising and simplistic. He used it during the recent autumn series and when he said he didn’t prepare the team well enough for the Grand Slam game in Ireland in 2017 and the opening Six Nations match in France in 2020. It feels like a cover story, a deflection – but from what? Has Jones simply run out of road, and fulfilled the theory that he has a shelf life after which the “riding” of players and coaches wears thin.
