Turcotte looks small against the machinery. The hulking, multi-limbed robot works in a sterile palette of screens, plugs, cameras, tubes and beeps. “The visualization is incredible,” he said later. “The ability to manipulate tissues with the robotic instruments, the precision you can have, the 3D view you get … it’s incredible. It makes surgery that much better, and that much more precise, and that much more fun.”
“There wasn’t any confusion,” he said of the initial diagnosis. “They shot straight — Mark, you have cancer. OK. So the first question was, how bad is the cancer? Where’s this whole thing going? They gave me the numbers. It’s caught early, and it’s very manageable. That was reassuring. And from there, we together, my wife and I, tried to do our own research and homework on the statistics, and what’s available. The cancer clinic was awesome for developing our sense of reassurance.
