Dave Tobener on the Giants' opportunity to restore an SF icon while enhancing it for a new generation of fans.
It’s such a simple, easy idea with no real downside — the Giants save a family-run business while also preserving San Francisco baseball history in the process. Excellent PR move! I may even buy a Joc Pederson shirsey to celebrate.
I reached out to the Giants with a simple question: Do they have any plans to contribute to the GoFundMe to repair the Double Play? Shana Daum, the Giants’ senior vice president of public affairs and community relations, responded, “While I’m not sure at this time exactly how we will support the Double Play’s recovery/rebuilding efforts we will be determining what is possible.
So while that isn’t the resounding “YES!” I was hoping to hear, it’s also not a “no.” The Giants are aware of the GoFundMe, they’re aware of what the Double Play means to San Francisco and they’re aware they need to wipe away all memory of this steaming pile of a season from the ticket-buying public’s mind as quickly as possible.
Hopefully, that all adds up to a significant donation to rebuild a San Francisco icon. It’s the right thing to do. Dave Tobener is a lifelong Giants fan whose family has had season tickets for over 30 years. He's been lucky enough to never miss a World Series game in The City in his lifetime, still isn't completely over 2002, and lives and dies with the Giants every year.
