Emmanuel Meafou was consistently ignored in Australia. After debuting for France in the Six Nations on Sunday, he reminded the Wallabies what they missed out on.

Just over five years ago, unable to get a contract in Super Rugby, Emmanuel Meafou toiled as a scaffolder during the week while playing for Warringah at weekends. On Sunday, after helpingCurrent Waratahs coach Darren Coleman coached the forward at Warringah and said he had recognised his talent back then.

“He definitely had the potential to be a professional player and I tried really hard to keep him Australia,” Coleman said.“He just had bigger offers in France, unfortunately, so it was a real shame because he is genuinely an Aussie kid – born and raised in Brisbane – and our country is crying out for a big tighthead lock like that.”

Meafou’s huge 202cm, 145kg frame attracted offers from French giants Lyon, Toulouse and Clermont, who each offered three-year deals.
