Things may look bleak, but that's when the heroes of Starfleet do their best work
There's no denying it, Star Trek has been in rough shape the last few years. Maybe even the last 17 years. JJ Abrams' Star Trek reboot started off pretty strong, but die-hard fans could already see the problems forming: an overabundance of action and snark was sneaking in.
Star Trek Into Darkness was... bad. So bad, that it kept people away from Star Trek Beyond, the best of the three Kelvin timeline movies. 2017 saw Star Trek return to TV with Discovery and, ever since, fans have been arguing over which of the new era of shows is the worst.
In truth, all the new stories have pros and cons — like any show does — but when it comes to Trek, the fans can be very possessive over what they feel is"right.
" Perhaps not more than almost any other fanbase, but certainly more vocal than most. Now, it seems that Trek fans may not have anything new to argue about, as the two remaining shows, Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, have been canceled, and nothing solid has been announced. While this wouldn't be the first time the Star Trek universe has gone dark for a period, it does feel different this time.
Past eras ended with a sense of hope for the future. The Original Series was canceled after three seasons, but reruns and conventions — as well as an animated series — kept the spirit alive until the first movie. As Kirk and his crew had their adventures on the big screen, Next Generation kicked off a true golden age for the franchise, ending with the less than stellar Enterprise.
But even then, it felt like good things were on the horizon. Now, though, fans seem to be despondent, fearful of what the new Paramount Skydance entity will do to the franchise. But there may be hope yet... How Star Trek Found Itself Sucked Into A Black Hole The era of Star Trek that is coming to a close, often called"Nu-Trek" by fans online, has seemingly sucked up any hope people had for the franchise, leaving behind an emptiness.
The reality is that, despite what social media may have you believe, these new shows weren't created by people who hate Star Trek. No one spends a decade working on something because they want to destroy it. No, the people who were tasked with creating these shows worked to make things they believed in. Sometimes they succeeded, sometimes they didn't.
But many of the problems that have faced Nu-Trek aren't the fault of the creative forces. At least, not fully. Yes, Star Trek is sci-fi, and it needs a lot of special FX, but the extent that levels these shows went to was too much for the size of the franchise's fanbase to be reasonable. The most obvious problem with Star Trek as it stands today is that Paramount keeps trying to make the franchise into a Star Wars-sized property.
The studio has spent big on Star Trek since the 2009 movie, with the Nu-Trek shows having per-season budgets that would have covered multiple movies during the William Shatner and Patrick Stewart years. And those seasons have been, on average, about 10 episodes each. Yes, Star Trek is sci-fi, and it needs a lot of special FX, but the extent that these shows went to was too much for the size of the franchise's fanbase to be reasonable.

And it really works when it has space to explore . Imagine if Next Generation was given the same number of episodes as Discovery. That would get you to the 17th episode of the third season. That means no"Best of Both Worlds," which is undoubtedly a massive highpoint for the series.
The fewer episodes also meant that these new shows couldn't actually give time to the characters outside of some basic tropes. These are the things that doomed Nu-Trek, but, luckily, the next era can fix them. But Star Trek Can Win The No-Win Scenario Things look bleak for Star Trek, but, as the poet wrote, every night has its dawn.
The next era of Star Trek is already underway, and while little is actually known about it, what is know is kind of promising. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the minds behind the fantastic Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and directors of Game Night have been brought in to handle a new movie that will essentially be a reboot. Based on what has been reported, Daley and Goldstein are starting fresh.
No returning actors, and no characters from the past. They will be creating a Star Trek that is new viewer friendly in every way, and that is exactly what the franchise needs. Of course, Daley and Goldstein are known for comedies, and that can be worrying. Yes, Star Trek can be funny.
It should have comedy in it, because that is an essential part of basic existence. But it also needs to be dramatic. Thankfully, Daley and Goldstein have shown that they can handle some serious stuff as well. Dungeons & Dragons has some pretty heavy moments, and the duo didn't shy away from them or cap them with jokes.
They understand that the serious needs to breathe, or else the audience won't connect with the characters. Dungeons & Dragons also shows that they understand the other important element that makes Star Trek so special: competent people being competent. The best Star Trek is, at the end of the day, stories about very smart and capable people using their smarts to solve problems.
Action is, of course, important, but Trek isn't just about the pew pew pews, that's what Star Wars is for. No, Star Trek is about the best of humanity doing their best and doing it well. And, as odd as it may seem, Daley and Godlstein's Dungeons and Dragons is about a group of people being really good at what they do, and doing it really well. Can Daley and Goldstein fix Star Trek all alone?
No. But they can set the course, and, if they set it right and Paramount Skydance doesn't get too caught up in the moment and keeps the budget at a reasonable spot for both the movie and whatever else comes about, if everyone, from the execs on down, remembers that Star Trek is about hope, unity, and, faith in one another, then something truly special can come out of this dark time.
