The new action thriller The Furious, starring Joe Taslim, has achieved a near-perfect 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, breaking the actor's previous record set by The Raid. The film, which premiered at TIFF 2025 and was released in June 2026, has been praised for its fight choreography and intense spectacle, drawing comparisons to the beloved Indonesian classic. With a strong domestic box office projection and an international release by Lionsgate, The Furious is shaping up to be one of the year's biggest hits.

A new action-packed movie fights out The Raid for a Rotten Tomatoes record. Fifteen years ago, a small-budget Indonesian movie, The Raid , became a worldwide sensation for its choreographed action sequences and landed on many best lists.

Although a sequel was made three years later, a third movie was cancelled, while Netflix's American remake is in the works. Meanwhile, one of the movie's stars, Joe Taslim, has taken his talents overseas and featured in the new action thriller, The Furious. In the English-language Hong Kong movie, Taslim portrays a journalist and ally to the heartbroken father, Wang Wei (Xie Miao), whose daughter gets kidnapped.

They undergo a rescue mission to save those abducted by a brutal criminal empire, but not without a bloody showdown. Following its TIFF premiere in 2025, The Furious earned near-universal acclaim for the incredible fight choreography and action-packed spectacle, which has been compared to The Raid. It's currently one of 2026's highest-rated movies with a near-perfect score of 97% based on 106 reviews. With the action thriller now available in theaters, moviegoers are equally receptive to the stunning display.

With over 250 verified ratings so far, The Furious currently has an incredible 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Taslim is one of the most well-known Indonesian martial artists, who featured in The Night Comes for Us, Fast & Furious 6, and Star Trek Beyond. He also portrayed the iconic villain Sub-Zero in both Mortal Kombat movies.

However, among his film projects, The Raid was his most popular and was tied for the actor's record-setting 87% audience score with Mortal Kombat II. Now, his new movie, The Furious, breaks that record by a solid nine-point difference. Besides movies, Taslim also appeared in HBO Max's Warrior with Andrew Koji and Starz's Blindspotting. While Warner Bros. confirmed that Mortal Kombat III was in development, it's unclear whether the actor star will return given his character's fate.

However, he has expressed interest in doing a Bi-han/Sub-Zero prequel movie. At the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, The Furious was awarded runner-up for the People's Choice Award, Midnight Madness. Lionsgate Films handled the movie's international release, including the United States on June 12, with around 1,251 theaters.

As the moviegoers' reception is very strong, Deadline reported that The Furious is projected to earn roughly $3 million domestically, which is enough to land on the top 10 charts with another new release, Disclosure Day. Japanese filmmaker and stunt performer Kenji Tanigaki directed The Furious, while the writing team consisted of Mak Tin-shu, Lei Zhilong, Shum Kwan-sin, and Frank Hui. Alongside Miao and Taslim, the cast also features Yang Enyou, Jeeja Yanin, Brian Le, Joey Iwanaga, and Yayan Ruhian. The Furious is now playing in theaters
