Bus franchising - giving power back to passengers - starts on Sunday

The first 175 buses entering Greater Manchester's Bee Network under franchising can be revealed today.

The list includes a series of key routes across Bolton, Salford and Wigan, taking in hospitals, shopping centres, the Trafford centre and schools. Also included on the list are circular services and schools services, as well as the X buses and the V buses running on the Guided Busway. For the first time since the deregulation of buses everywhere outside of London in 1986, operators in Greater Manchester will have no power to set routes, fares or frequencies - they have bid for, and secured contracts to run, buses on behalf of the elected Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the elected mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

The first of three phases of bus franchising in Greater Manchester begins on Sunday - covering Bolton, Wigan and parts of Salford and Bury. All other areas of Greater Manchester will be included by 2025. Bus franchising symbolises the real start of the Bee Network, Greater Manchester plan for a London-style integrated bus, tram and train network, also connected to cycling and walking routes.
