Apple iPhone manufacturer Foxconn's Foxtron brand leans on an Italian icon to raise its profile.
Getting an Italian design house to design a model from an up-and-coming auto manufacturer is an old, venerable play. When various small manufacturers were trying to emerge onto the international stage in a serious way, outfits like Bertone, Ghia, and Pininfarina lent their hands, offering eye-catching production sheetmetal or even wilder concepts to generate headlines—and maybe even sales.
Foxconn's dusted off this playbook and brought Pininfarina onboard to do up the latest electric vehicle from the company, the Foxtron Model B electric urban SUV., you'll know that Foxconn—known in its home market of Taiwan as Hon Hai, and better known as a maker of Apple iPhones and other electronics—is trying to up its game with a raft of EVs that, I hopes, it can eventually sell internationally. It also owns the old GM Lordstown factory, which makes several EVs, including the Lordstown Endurance pickup. As for the Model B, it's handsome enough, with lots of flourishes and futuristic doo-dads, like the side-mounted cameras and centrally mounted large screen . There's a bit of Jaguar I-Pace to the roofline and especially the squat haunches, though this is far stubbier and chunkier than that Jag overall. This is certainly not Pininfarina's finest work, but having the name on the fender is a sign of Foxconn's seriousness about its EV business.Specifics are minimal on the hatchback-like SUV. Foxconn says the drag coefficient is a low 0.26, thanks in part to lots of little aero tricks like the D-pillar"air curtain" and the hood duct . The company promises a 280-mile range, but battery size, motor output, and other important specs to put that claim in context are not yet available.Foxconn says that it hopes to sell its vehicles, eventually, in many markets—including the U.S. Whether it'll leverage its burgeoning U.S. manufacturing capability to produce the Model B remains to be seen.
