. Few would envy those who must choose which of their nation’s decorated stars will get to perform the role. For some countries though, there isn’t a choice to make.
Eight years later, Tuvalu is sending double the number of competitors to Paris – and this time around, there are four other nations who only have one representative.At first or even second glance, Belize, Nauru, Somalia, and Liechtenstein have little in common. They span four continents, are vastly different in size and all speak different languages. Even the most proficient Only Connect player would struggle to find the link between them.
Remarkably, given that more than 10,000 athletes will compete in Paris, Belize and Nauru’s athletes could well end up competing directly against one another. Both Belize’s Shaun Gill and Nauru’s Winzar Kakiouea are due to battle for the glittering jewel in athletics’ crown, the 100m. Kakiouea’s journey to the Games is perhaps the most remarkable of them all, given the country he will be representing in the 100m does not have a single racetrack. The tiny Micronesian island is five times smaller than the city in which he will represent it.his goal is to break the Nauruan 100m national record, which he jointly holds, at these Games. When he steps out on the track, all 12,883 of his countrymen will be willing him to do so from half a world away.
