. The 2023 Finke Desert Race is a two-day race from Alice Springs to Aputula and back. It's always held over the Queen's birthday in June.The Australian-built #773 Ford Ranger Raptor, driven by Hall of Fame off-road racer Brad Lovell and co-driven by his son Byam, competed in the Production 4WD class, beating the #776 Toyota 76 Land Cruiser of Adam Jiear and also the #797 Mitsubishi MK Tritan of Jordan Lawson, which didn't complete the race.
Lovell finished the grueling 285-mile round-trip race in 5 hours, 56 minutes, and 30 seconds, the combined times of Day 1 and Day 2 . The Day 2 time set a record for the Production 4WD class.The overall win went to the #487 Mitsubishi TSCO trophy truck of renowned Aussie off-road motorcycle racer Toby Price in an overall time of 3 hours, 21 minutes, and 46 seconds. Price competed in the Extreme 2WD class.
The Ranger Raptor's win was a team effort between Ford Performance, Ford Australia, Lovell Racing, Huseman Engineering, and Walkinshaw Performance. Lovell and Ford Performance had no prior experience in the Finke Desert Race.
