From 1985 to 2015, all men who had sexual intercourse with another man even once since 1977 were barred from donating blood, supposedly to reduce the risk of the transmission of HIV through blood donation.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reportedly has plans to lift some of the restrictions that bar most gay and bisexual men from donating blood.on Wednesday that the federal agency would issue the new rules in the coming months. Those rules would reportedly require all potential donors to complete an individualized risk assessment.

Although thedid not specify what questions would appear on that assessment, it reports that potential donors may be asked if they've had multiple sex partners in the past three months, and if they’ve had anal sex with any of those partners. If they have had anal sex with new or multiple partners, they must wait three months before donating; all other donors, however, are eligible.
