Scott Waugh is a former stunt performer.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT After a long wait, The Expendables 4 is hitting theaters, bringing the franchise back to a hard R rating and continuing its unique brand of tongue-in-cheek mayhem. It’s been a long time coming; the last franchise entry was released in 2014, making it nearly a decade between films.

Scott Waugh: I was totally thrilled when they asked me to come in and direct the film. It was really important to me… I said, “Look, I don't want to reinvent the brand. I think the brand is great. I think the brand is what the audience expects, and I would really like to go back, tonally, to the original Expendables that Sly did.

I loved finding out that you are a former stunt performer and coordinator. Does that affect the way you direct films like this? Scott Waugh: I have been lucky to have worked with really physically talented actors. And most of the time… you're talking about Jackie Chan, then you’ve got Sly, and Jason, and all these guys, and then I did Act of Valor with real Navy SEALs. You’re playing in a toolbox with crazy, amazing tools, and you just want to use them the best way you can.

This movie does focus a lot on a new batch of people--the new blood. Was there anybody new to the franchise that you were particularly excited to work with? Scott Waugh: It was. Alan had designed the entire fight sequence for the big fight between Jason and Iko, and I told him, “This has got to be creative. We’ve got to go back to your roots. It's got to be violent and creative and exciting.” We choreographed it for a while, showed it to those actors, [and] they were stoked on it [and] had some ideas, but when it came to actually shooting it, we didn't have time to rehearse it.
