If you're looking for an alternative to Germany's Christmas markets, then this city is the place to go

Autumn may have only just begun, but it’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas, especially if you want to plan a trip to one of Europe’s spectacular markets. Across the continent, historic cities are transformed into scenes which could rival any fairy tale; think old buildings strewn with sparkly lights and town squares packed with wooden stalls.

This ancient city certainly knows how to impress visitors over the festive period and provides a great alternative if you’ve already been to Germany’s popular markets - in fact, after visiting Prague, one reviewer on TripAdvisor wrote: “It’s clear Czech Republic is giving Germany a run for their money when it comes to Christmas markets.” The Times even featured it on their list of the Best Christmas markets in Europe for 2023.

As you’d expect the stalls sell an assortment of gifts and handmade items, from ornaments to toys. But what really sets Prague’s markets apart is the food and drink. More markets can be found in Wenceslas Square, a five minute walk away from the Old Town Square, and at Prague Castle in front of St George’s Basilica. But there’s no shortage of things to do in the city away from the Christmas markets, either, as Prague is packed full of museums, art galleries and landmarks to visit.
