Already known by monikers such as “The Hillbilly Cat” and “The Memphis Flash,” Presley hadn’t incurred much criticism for his signature physicality yet—but that would change in 1956. "Hound Dog" Didn’t Just Make Elvis Presley a Star It Defined His Rebellious Image 1956 was one of the biggest years in Presley’s career. He released “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Blue Suede Shoes,” runaway hits that remain among his most popular even today. And by the spring, he found himself so inspired by a live performance of Big Mama Thornton’s 1952 single “Hound Dog” that he decided to release his own cover of it, coupled by multiple highly-publicized live performances. The first, and perhaps the most famous, of Presley’s live performances of “Hound Dog” occurred on April 3 on NBC’s The Milton Berle Show. The Mississippi-born singer performed the song without his guitar in order to draw attention to his dance moves, which included grinding and thrust-like movements along with his signature “rubber legs” move. Scores of viewers immediately voiced their disapproval, yet Presley repeated the performance two days later, unrepentant. Perhaps the most shocking aspect of these performances was his band’s transition to a slow rework of the chorus during which the singer’s movements became slower and even more sensual than before. Immediately, “Hound Dog,” whose lyrics resemble a diss track more than a seductive ballad, became an anthem of sexuality and teen rebellion. Edgar Hoover denounced the performances and even the song itself, calling Presley a danger to American morality. Ironically, this would mirror the accusations that Presley would later hurl at other musicians, including The Beatles. At the time, however, The King of Rock and Roll reveled in his rebellious public image, and it paid off: Presley’s version of “Hound Dog” sold over four million copies upon its release and spent 11 weeks at number one—a record that wouldn’t be beat until 1992, when Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road” held the spot for 13 weeks.
