Religion column: The call to carry the Easter message continues after the day ends
Stories sometimes unfold and finally make sense only when we reach the end. For Christians following the cycle of the Christian year, we know the ending before we enter the narrative.
Mark’s Gospel does not record miracles and mystical appearances of the risen Christ. It describes in detail the journey of three women, as they head out to anoint the body of their beloved friend Jesus. The apparent lack of detail in this version of the Easter story reminds us that it isn’t so much what is in the detail but what is in Jesus’ request of us. By the end of the chapter, everyone has abandoned him, these faithful women are clothed in fear and there is no one to continue the story.
Like the women at Jesus’ tomb, we, too, may be burdened by fear. But we do not head out on this journey alone.
