AFL: Midweek Tackle delve into Essendon's list conundrum - and figure out what they can do in order to rise back up the ladder.

The rise and fall of Essendon in 2024 has been spectacular as their finals hopes hang by a thread with just two more matches before the end of this year’s home-and-away season .

“I think they’re making progress, but they’re not making progress fast enough for us in the media, but also for their supporters who are getting a little bit angry about this as well,” McFarlane begun by saying. “On the balance of probability, I think their list is getting better – you get someone like Nate Caddy come in, we’ve seen a few other players develop. But I think overall, we don’t really know until the back end of next season,” McFarlane continued.

And not too dissimilarly is teammate Ben Hobbs – who is also out of contract in 2025, and on Saturday night played his first match since Round 10 after being dropped for over two months.“Someone’s going to come for him – Ben Hobbs is another one who’s struggling to get a game.” Kicking three behinds in the final quarter against the Suns, the 2015 All-Australian player was unable to slot his side back into the top eight, alongside several other teammates.

“Dylan Shiel, do they need him? They’ve got so many midfielders, there’s a surplus – I wonder if St Kilda will have another crack,” Clark suggested. As announced by the club on Tuesday morning, Dyson Heppell has announced his retirement from the game at season’s end. Yet to play in 2024, his 16 games last year brought 15 goals – and with an attacking half filled at times with the likes of Kyle Langford, Harrison Jones, Nate Caddy and Peter Wright – his time at Windy Hill could be coming to a close.

The Bombers have had half a dozen first round picks in the last four national drafts, with all six still currently contracted at the club.
