“In Paris, it’s all about location,” says François Delahaye with the resolve of one who has lived in the city for the past 30 years – in Trocadéro, in fact, in the 16th arrondissement, just across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower.
“If that is the very best location in the city, then you’ll be at the Ritz Paris, or the Hôtel Plaza Athénée. Rooms in this light-filled, 72-room hotel – overlooking Pont Neuf, between Le Louvre and Le Marais – were designed by edgy American architect Peter Marino as a series of private apartments; there are more than 11 room types and suite categories.l’héritage des enfants
Plaza Athénée and its fabled sibling, Le Meurice – the original palace hotel in Paris, which opened in 1835 – are both part of the Dorchester Collection, owned by the controversial Sultan of Brunei. Delahaye puts some of the city’s top suites through their paces in the selection below, doing his best to suit guest requirements to form and function. He promises he’s not biased; at least, he has tried not to be. For the past three decades-plus, he has worked at a number of Paris hotels, including Hôtel Lancaster, Parc Hôtel Paris, and the Warwick among others, so he knows his patch.
