Asimov Press releases the first commercially available book encoded in DNA, showcasing the potential of this innovative storage medium for long-term archival purposes.

DNA data storage is taking a step towards mainstream adoption with the release of the first commercially available book encoded in DNA. Asimov Press , in collaboration with Boston-based company Catalog , has launched an anthology of biotechnology essays and science fiction stories, available in both physical and DNA formats. For $60, customers can acquire a physical copy of the book alongside a metal capsule containing dried DNA encoding the entire contents.

The 240-page book, representing 481,280 bytes of data, was encoded using Catalog's innovative combinatorial assembly method, likened to the Gutenberg printing press. This method involves creating an alphabet of DNA pieces that can be assembled to represent bits, allowing for efficient and scalable DNA encoding. Catalog's chief technology officer, David Turek, highlights the cost-effectiveness and replicability of DNA storage, stating that encoding the book in DNA and creating 1,000 copies cost only a few thousand dollars. This project marks a significant milestone in the development of DNA data storage. While companies like Biomemory have previously offered DNA storage cards for personal data, Asimov Press's book demonstrates the potential of DNA for long-term archival storage. The DNA molecules, preserved in stainless steel capsules for thousands of years, can be read using sequencing machines. This approach offers a compelling alternative to traditional data centers, which consume vast amounts of energy. DNA storage's ability to remain dormant for extended periods without energy requirements makes it an ideal candidate for preserving large datasets for future generations
