Students who already face social consequences for being more introverted or somehow “different” from their peers are more of the invisible victims of America’s refusal to regulate automatic weapons.
As school shootings in this country lurk close to my doorstep, these matters quickly turn from joke fodder to raw fear. I wonder if the same teachers who pledged to sacrifice themselves for us will soon be gone. I wonder how many more children will have to die before the leaders we elect1,924 school shooting incidents
in grades K-12. Alongside school dances and football games, the threat and fear of school shootings have become a typical milestone in the American education experience. Rather than produce rigorous and effective legislation, the rise in the number of these shooting incidents has produced a collective acceptance of this threat to younger generations in the United States.

It is “normal” for us to turn on the television and see yet another headline of a student our age being shot. It is “normal” for us to see school, long meant to be a haven for learning and comfort, become an arena for bloodshed and massacre.
In the United States, schools are battlegrounds – ideologically and sometimes literally. At the ripe old age of 18, high schoolers in many states can legally purchase and own weapons that are otherwise used in war. America’s ignorance and refusal to address this long-standing epidemic of senseless brutality leaves its next victims bracing for impact.
