Less than 48 hours later he was diagnosed with ttrial fibrillation , a condition causing a person's heart to beat irregularly, increasing their risk of stroke and heart failure. "It was very hard to not be the independent person that I am. It became very depressing and basically I had great difficulty getting through each day."The treatment, known as the "convergent" procedure, has only been available at one hospital in Western Australia before now.The treatment combines two different types of ablation, surgical and catheter, provided in two stages about three months apart to treat both inside and outside the heart.

"In some ways, the things we're doing aren't revolutionary. The thing that's novel is we're doing them together," Walters said.
